Job Description

Performance Garage seeks a Production Manager (PM) for our 2022-2023 Season and beyond.

About Our Organization: Performance Garage, a non-profit dance center and theater, is in its 22nd year of serving the Philadelphia dance community whose mission is to create an environment that nurtures dance artists and facilitates the building of a broader audience for dance in Philadelphia. Over the past five years, the Performance Garage has completed a two-million-dollar renovation and in 2019 alone, before our Covid closure, we served twenty thousand people. As an incubator and hub for local dance talent, the Performance Garage offers subsidized rental rates for artists to host their classes, workshops, rehearsals, and performances, as well as a free after-school dance program for youth. Aside from our robust community of subsidized studio and theater renters our additional programs include HubChats, a community discussion of topics central to dancers and dance makers, DanceFilms, showings of relevant dance related films, YouthMoves, our free youth engagement classes, and DanceVisions, our Resident Artist program.

The Production Manager functions as the Performance Garage’s advance point of contact for all technical related needs including video and audio file assembly, lighting pre-cuing and design, and facilitating over-hire as needed. The PM is responsible for operation of lighting, audio and video control for all technical rehearsals and performances. This position is also charged with general oversight, upkeep and forward-minded upgrades of the performance facilities within the building infrastructure and coordination with outside maintenance and repair contractors if required. The job asks for your full knowledge of video, sound, and lighting (must know Q-Lab audio and video [ver. 5], analog audio consoles [Mackie]), and ETC ION programming and operation as well as the coordination and execution of necessary maintenance.  Design knowledge is very helpful, especially in lighting and video.

The PM works with a great deal of independence and exercises independent judgment in performing a wide variety of duties; however, you will be communicating on an ongoing basis with the Programming & Marketing Manager and on an as-needed basis with the other Performance Garage team-members.

Job Duties:

  • Hands on, operation and oversight of all technical related elements of dance focused performance venue and rehearsal spaces.

  • Sets up, maintains, and operates lighting, sound, and video systems.

  • Maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies in coordination with Programming & Marketing Manager.

  • In advance of each production rental, communicates with representatives from the production to determine the necessary technical requirements, such as lighting, sound, video, staging and special needs, to best serve the production and ensure compliance with rules and safety requirements.

  • Must have very good interpersonal skills with people.  Need to be able to communicate complex technical and lighting design ideas to choreographers who may or may not have technical experience, both before tech and under time pressure during tech.

  • Troubleshoots any technical problems and/or house problems during performances.

  • In most cases, will run the ETC ION light board, Mackie sound console and QLab computer (ver. 5) for shows.

  • Prepares theater before shows and makes sure theater is ready for classes and rehearsals after shows finish.

  • Experience in dance production is required; stage management ability is helpful.  The position will require you to learn choreography quickly for the purpose of being able to run cues on your own (without a stage manager).

  • The PM is expected to be available for all production rentals.  If you find you have outside commitments it is your responsibility to find a qualified replacement for yourself.

Because of the nature of production rentals, hours are varied and can vary as much as between 25-85 hours a month.  In addition to production hours, staff meetings occur weekly for 2 hours, and monthly maintenance hours are provided.  Position is paid hourly: $25/hr; overtime after 8 hours daily, 40 hours weekly as well as employer-provided health benefit stipend at conclusion of three months of employment.
